01 / Safety

Before you plug it in: the safety rules

Every pick on this page has a thermostat, tip-over and overheat shutoff, and a UL, ETL or CSA mark in its listing. How you use it matters just as much. These are the rules from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Fire Administration.

  1. Plug it straight into a wall outlet. “Plug electric space heaters directly into a wall outlet—never into an extension cord or power strip.” (CPSC)
  2. Keep it 3 feet from anything that can burn. “Keep portable heaters at least three feet away from drapes, furniture, bedding and other combustible materials” (CPSC)
  3. Turn it off when you sleep or leave the room. “Turn off heaters when sleeping.” (CPSC) “Turn space heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.” (U.S. Fire Administration)
  4. Buy one with a safety mark from a testing lab. “certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory” (CPSC) “Make sure the heater carries the Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) label.” (DOE)
  5. Buy one that shuts off if it tips over. “Buy a unit with a tip-over safety switch, which automatically shuts off the heater if the unit is tipped over.” (DOE)
  6. In a bathroom, only use one made for it. “most electric heaters do not have protection against electrocution should the appliance come in contact with water.” (CPSC)

The CPSC counts about 1,600 fires, 70 deaths and 150 injuries a year from portable heaters (2020 to 2022).[1]

02 / Heat and cost

How much heat you get, and what it costs

Any heater that plugs into a normal outlet uses at most 1,500 watts. That makes 5,118 Btu of heat an hour (EIA: 1 kWh = 3,412 Btu). The priciest heater in our table makes no more heat than the cheapest one.[7]

Heater maker Dimplex plans on 10 watts per square foot in an insulated room. So one 1,500 W heater warms about 150 sq ft. Yet the 6 heaters here that state a room size claim 162 to 300 sq ft for the same heat. A cold or drafty room needs more; a room your furnace already warms needs less.[6]

Room size each listing claims for the same 1,500 W of heat
  • Dimplex's rule for 1,500 W: about 150 sq ft150
  • G-Ocean GHOH1502MB oil-filled radiator162
  • Shinic FP218-15S ceramic heater200
  • GiveBest PTC910EO ceramic heater200
  • GiveBest UPH300M fan heater200
  • Dreo HSH014 fan heater250
  • Costway NSC-150-7A2R oil-filled radiator300

Square feet. Every heater here makes the same 1,500 W of heat.

Oil-filled, ceramic or infrared: all turn the same power into the same heat. An oil-filled radiator has no fan, so it is silent and stays warm after you switch it off, but it is slow to warm up. A ceramic fan heater warms a room fast. An infrared heater warms the people and things in front of it.

Cost: at the U.S. average home price of 18.19¢ per kWh (EIA, year to date through July 2026), 1,500 W costs about $0.27 an hour on high, or $2.18 for 8 hours. Prices differ a lot by state.[8] See the cost in your state.

03 / Garage

Heating a garage: what 240 V needs

A heater that can warm a garage runs on 240 volts, like a clothes dryer. A 1,500 W plug-in heater only takes the chill off the spot in front of it.

Size it. A 2-car garage is about 400 to 500 sq ft (20 × 20 to 22 × 22 ft). At 10 watts per square foot, that is 4,000 to 5,000 W, or 13,648 to 17,060 Btu an hour. A garage with no insulation needs more. The makers of the 240 V heaters here that state a room size plan on about 10 watts per square foot.[6]

Plan the circuit. Amps = watts ÷ volts, so a 5,000 W heater draws about 20.8 amps at 240 V. It needs its own 240 V circuit. A hardwired heater has no plug; an electrician wires it to the breaker. A plug-in one needs a matching 240 V outlet, such as the 30-amp outlet the Dr. Infrared DR-988 listing asks for.

Hire an electrician unless you wire 240 V circuits yourself. Mount it high and aim it at where you work, and keep 3 feet clear of anything that can burn.

05 / Questions

Frequently asked

Is it safe to leave a space heater on overnight?
No. The CPSC says "Turn off heaters when sleeping," and the U.S. Fire Administration says to turn them off when you go to bed. Warm the room before bed, then switch it off, or use one with a timer so it turns itself off. An oil-filled radiator stays warm for a while after it is off.
What size space heater do I need?
Plan on 10 watts per square foot in an insulated room (Dimplex's rule). One 1,500 W plug-in heater warms about 150 sq ft. Bigger room claims on a listing do not mean more heat: every plug-in heater tops out at the same 1,500 W.
Which space heater is cheapest to run?
None. Every 1,500 W heater turns the same power into the same heat, so it costs about $0.27 an hour on high at the U.S. average price. A thermostat that switches it off and fewer hours of use are what lower the bill. Our cost page shows the price in your state.
Can I use a space heater in a bathroom?
Only one made for bathrooms, with a shock-guard plug (ALCI or GFCI). The CPSC says most electric heaters have no protection if they get wet and should not be used in bathrooms. Keep it away from the tub and sink.
What size heater do I need for a 2-car garage?
About 4,000 to 5,000 watts for 400 to 500 sq ft, and more if the garage has no insulation. That means a 240 V heater on its own circuit, put in by an electrician. A 120 V plug-in heater is too small.
Are infrared or oil-filled heaters more efficient?
No. At the same watts, every electric heater makes the same heat. They differ in how they deliver it: infrared warms what is in front of it, and oil-filled is silent and stays warm after you switch it off. Claims that one type saves money are the maker's, not a test.
Can I plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip?
No. The CPSC says to plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet, never into an extension cord or power strip.
