01 / Terms

What a child lock, a cool-touch outside and an ETL mark are

A child lock stops the buttons from working until you unlock them, so a small hand cannot change the heat. We only count a child lock when the heater's own Amazon listing says it has one.

ETL and UL are marks from testing labs. They mean a lab tested the heater against a safety standard. We only count a mark when the listing names it.

A cool-touch outside means the shell stays cooler than a bare metal heater, so a quick touch is less likely to burn. It does not make the heater safe to leave in reach, and only some listings say it.

02 / Timer

Warm the room, then turn it off

The CPSC says "Turn off heaters when sleeping." For a nursery, that means warming the room before bedtime, then turning the heater off before the baby sleeps.[1]

A heater with a timer can switch itself off for you, so it is easy to do that last step. Keep it 3 feet from the crib and bedding, and plug it straight into a wall outlet, never an extension cord or power strip.

Heater maker Dimplex plans on 10 watts of heat per square foot in a standard insulated room. At that rate, a 1,500 W heater heats about 150 sq ft, more than a typical nursery needs.[3]
