Best Space Heater for a Bathroom (2026): Check the Plug First

Buy the Dreo HSH003A bathroom heater ($84.99 on Amazon): its plug has an ALCI shock guard, and its listing states a thermostat, tip-over and overheat shutoff, and an ETL safety mark. The CPSC warns that most heaters have no shock protection, so skip any heater without it.[1]

01 / Plug

Why the plug matters in a bathroom

An ALCI (appliance leakage current interrupter) is a shock guard built into the plug. It cuts the power if current starts to leak, the way a GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) outlet does at the wall. The Dreo HSH003A bathroom heater's listing says: “DREO 1500W Space Heaters with ALCI Safety Plug for Bathroom and Indoor Use”

The CPSC, the U.S. product safety agency, warned in March 1990, after three people died when a portable heater went into a bathtub (two young children and a 65-year-old woman), that “most electric heaters do not have protection against electrocution should the appliance come in contact with water. For this reason, electric heaters should not be used in bathrooms.”

That warning is about heaters with no shock protection. An ALCI plug is that protection, built into the heater's own cord. Even so, those deaths came from heaters that went into a tub: keep any heater well away from the tub, shower and sink.[1]

02 / Checklist

Buying a different bathroom heater? Check these six things

  • Shock guard. An ALCI or GFCI plug. The listing should say so in its own words; our pick's does.
  • Thermostat. It holds the room at a set heat and switches off when it gets there. The U.S. Department of Energy says to look for one.[3]
  • Tip-over shutoff. If the heater is knocked over, it switches itself off. The Department of Energy says to look for this too.
  • Overheat shutoff. It cuts the power if the heater gets too hot inside. Our pick's listing states it; check that any other heater's listing does too.
  • Safety mark. UL, ETL or CSA means a testing lab listed the heater. ETL and CSA are other labs that do the same job as UL.
  • Sold by Amazon. Our pick is sold and shipped by Amazon, not a third-party seller. To choose a different heater, run these six checks on its listing.

03 / Placement

Where to put it

Keep the heater away from the tub, shower and sink. Plug it straight into the wall: the CPSC says never to use an extension cord or power strip, and to keep heaters 3 feet from drapes, furniture and bedding.[2]

04 / Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best space heater for a bathroom?
The Dreo HSH003A bathroom heater is our pick at $84.99 on Amazon on November 4, 2026. Its plug has an ALCI shock guard, and its listing states a thermostat, tip-over and overheat shutoff, and an ETL mark.
Can I use a space heater in a bathroom?
Only one with shock protection, like an ALCI plug. The CPSC wrote that “most electric heaters do not have protection against electrocution should the appliance come in contact with water. For this reason, electric heaters should not be used in bathrooms.” Keep it away from the tub, shower and sink.
What is an ALCI plug?
An ALCI is a shock guard in the plug. It cuts the power if current leaks. It does the same job as a GFCI outlet, but it travels with the heater.
Is it safe to plug a heater into a GFCI outlet in a bathroom?
A GFCI outlet adds shock protection at the wall. The CPSC says GFCIs “can be installed in any wall outlet to protect consumers against electrocution hazards and are particularly desirable for outdoor outlets and in bathrooms” and: “If an electric appliance accidentally topples into a sink or tub, the GFCI will shut down the power in milliseconds to protect the consumer against electrocution.” It also says to consider portable GFCI shock protectors. Keep the heater away from water either way.
What does ETL mean on a space heater?
ETL is a safety mark from a testing lab, like UL and CSA. It means the lab listed that heater.
