Best Space Heater for a Large Room (400 sq ft): What One Heater Can and Can't Do (2026)
For a 400 sq ft room, buy three Dreo Atom 316 (HSH006) ceramic heaters, each on its own circuit. The room needs about 4,000 W, and no plug-in heater makes more than 1,500 W (about 150 sq ft each).1

$70.19 on AmazonIf fan noise bothers you
Amazon Basics CY62RR-7 oil-filled radiator · 1,500 W · ETL mark · tip-over and overheat shutoff
No fan, so no fan noise, and it stays warm after you switch it off. It also makes 1,500 W, so a room this size needs three, each on its own circuit. Turn heaters off when you sleep.

Comfort Zone FH101 fan heater · 1,500 W · ETL mark · tip-over and overheat shutoff
The cheapest heater with every safety feature and a safety mark. It makes the same 1,500 W, so three cost $74.01.

For a room you heat every day
A 240 V wall or garage-style heater · 4,000 to 5,000 W on its own circuit
One heater makes the 4,000 W this room needs. An electrician wires it to its own circuit.

A ductless mini split · heat pump · 240 V
Costs more up front. The DOE says a heat pump cuts the electricity used for heat about in half, and it cools in summer.

01 / Size
How many heaters does 400 sq ft need?
Heater maker Dimplex plans on 10 watts of heat per square foot in a standard insulated room. At that rate, a 400 sq ft room needs 4,000 W, or 13,648 Btu an hour.1
| Plug-in heaters | Watts | Btu an hour | Sq ft heated | Circuits | Cost per hour | Dreo Atom 316 (HSH006) ceramic heater cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 heater | 1,500 | 5,118 | 150 | 1 | 27¢ | $35.96 |
| 2 heaters | 3,000 | 10,236 | 300 | 2 | 55¢ | $71.92 |
| 3 heaters | 4,500 | 15,354 | 450 | 3 | 82¢ | $107.88 |
| Your room: 400 sq ft | 4,000 | 13,648 | 400 | needs this much heat | ||
No plug-in heater makes more than 1,500 W, which is 5,118 Btu an hour (1 kWh = 3,412 Btu, EIA). That is 150 sq ft. So one heater takes the chill off part of a large room. It cannot heat all 400 sq ft, and a thermostat will not change that.2
Cold winters, bare walls or high ceilings need more than 10 W per sq ft. Count on three heaters as the minimum.

What it costs to run
Electric heat turns every watt into heat. At the U.S. average home price of 18.19¢ per kWh (EIA, January to July 2026), 3 heaters on high (4,500 W) cost about 82¢ an hour.3
Run all 3 for 8 hours a day and that is about $6.55 a day, or $196.45 over 30 days. A thermostat switches each heater off once the room is warm, so the real bill is lower. Prices vary a lot by state.
A heat pump, like a mini split, does the same job on about half the electricity, says the DOE.5
03 / Circuits
Why each heater needs its own circuit
One 1,500 W heater draws 12.5 amps at 120 V. A 15-amp breaker trips at 15 amps, so it carries one such heater and little else. Two on one circuit draw 25 amps and trip it.
So three heaters need three different circuits. Outlets on the same wall often share a breaker: flip one off at your panel and see which outlets go dead.
Plug each heater straight into the wall. The CPSC says never to use an extension cord or power strip, and to keep heaters 3 feet from drapes, furniture and bedding.4
04 / Questions
Frequently asked
- What is the best space heater for a large room?
- For a 400 sq ft room, the Dreo Atom 316 (HSH006) ceramic heater is our pick, and you need three. Each makes 1,500 W. Three are $107.88 on Amazon on November 4, 2026. No plug-in heater makes more than 1,500 W.
- Can one space heater heat a 400 sq ft room?
- No. The most a plug-in heater makes is 1,500 W. At 10 watts per square foot, that heats about 150 sq ft. A 400 sq ft room needs about 4,000 W.
- How many space heaters do I need for a large room?
- About three for 400 sq ft: 4,000 W divided by 1,500 W, rounded up. Put each on a different circuit. Two heaters cover about 300 sq ft.
- Can I plug two space heaters into the same circuit?
- Not on a 15-amp circuit. Each 1,500 W heater draws 12.5 amps, so two draw 25 amps and trip the breaker. Plug each into the wall on its own circuit, never into an extension cord or power strip.
- How much does it cost to run space heaters in a large room?
- 3 heaters on high (4,500 W) cost about 82¢ an hour at the U.S. average of 18.19¢ per kWh. A thermostat cycles them off once the room is warm.
- What heats a large room better than space heaters?
- A 240 V wall or garage-style heater of about 4,000 W, or a ductless mini split. Both heat the whole room from one unit. See our garage heater picks for 240 V models.
