Best Space Heater Under $50 (2026): Safety-Checked Picks and What They Cost to Run

The best space heater under $50 is the Dreo Atom 316 (HSH006) at $35.96: 1,500 W, a thermostat, tip-over and overheat shutoff, a timer, and a UL 1278 record in the lab's directory. Every 1,500 W heater costs the same $0.27 an hour to run, so the extra dollars buy features, not heat.

What other guides pick under $50, and our verdict

Wired's Best Cheap Heater is the Honeywell 360° Surround, and Good Housekeeping tested the Dreo Atom 316. Here is each one.[13][14]

  • Honeywell 360° Surround Space Heater

    Honeywell 360° Surround Space Heater

Wired, Best Cheap Heater (updated November 2026): the HHF365, $45 at Target, measured at 54 dB

    $44.99 · 1,500 W and 750 W · adjustable thermostat

Amazon sells a Honeywell 360° Surround at this price. Its listing names 12 safety protections but does not name a tip-over switch, though Wired lists a mechanical one, and the HHF365 has no record in Intertek's directory. Wired measured 54 dB, louder than the 47.9 dB Good Housekeeping measured for our pick.

How much does a space heater under $50 cost to run?

About $0.27 an hour on high. A 1,500 W heater uses 1.5 kWh each hour, and the U.S. average home price is 18.19¢ per kWh (EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.3, residential, year to date through August 2026). At 4 hours a day that is $32.74 a month. Over 150 winter days at 4 hours a day, it is $163.71.[11][10]

That is 4.6 times the $35.96 you pay for the Dreo Atom 316. So the price tag is the small part of the bill; a thermostat that switches the heater off and fewer hours of use are what lower it. Your state may be higher or lower; our space heater cost page lists every state.

What a space heater costs to run in your state

Does a $150 space heater heat more than a $30 one?

No. Any heater that plugs into a normal outlet tops out at 1,500 W, and 1,500 W makes 5,118 Btu of heat an hour (1 kWh = 3,412 Btu). The priciest plug-in heater makes no more heat than the cheapest one. Extra money buys a quieter fan, a remote, a timer, oscillation or a nicer finish.[9][10]

Some listings promise more. Among the heaters in our wider table of Amazon heaters, 6 state a room size of 162 to 300 sq ft for the same 1,500 W. The maker Dimplex gives a rule of thumb of 10 W per square foot in an insulated room, which is about 150 sq ft for one 1,500 W heater.

Do pricier space heaters heat more? Our study of room claims

How big a room will a space heater under $50 warm?

One room of about 150 sq ft, such as a bedroom, a home office or a small living room, if the room is insulated and the door is shut. That figure is the maker Dimplex's rule of thumb, not a tested rating. A cold, drafty or open-plan room needs more than 10 W per square foot. For a room over 200 sq ft, a second heater or a different kind of heat works better than a bigger-looking heater.[9]

Are cheap space heaters safe, and how can I tell?

A safety mark on an Amazon listing is the seller's word. The CPSC's own staff looked at 10 portable heaters and found that 4 were not certified to the voluntary standards and 3 had possible counterfeit certification markings.[2][3]

So we did not stop at the listing. Each heater in the table has all four features in its listing (1,500 W, thermostat, tip-over shutoff, overheat shutoff) and a record in Intertek's public ETL directory that names its model number and brand and says UL 1278, the safety standard for movable electric room heaters. We left off 6 more heaters under $50 from third-party sellers and 10 with no directory record we could match.

What safety features should a heater under $50 have?

Every heater here has a thermostat, tip-over shutoff and overheat shutoff in its listing and a UL 1278 record in Intertek's lab directory. How you use it matters just as much. These are the rules from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Fire Administration.

  1. Plug it straight into a wall outlet. “Plug electric space heaters directly into a wall outlet—never into an extension cord or power strip.” (CPSC)
  2. Keep it 3 feet from anything that can burn. “Keep portable heaters at least three feet away from drapes, furniture, bedding and other combustible materials” (CPSC)
  3. Turn it off when you sleep or leave the room. “Turn off heaters when sleeping.” (CPSC) “Turn space heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.” (U.S. Fire Administration)
  4. Buy one with a safety mark from a testing lab. “certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory” (CPSC) “Make sure the heater carries the Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) label.” (DOE)
  5. Buy one that shuts off if it tips over. “Buy a unit with a tip-over safety switch, which automatically shuts off the heater if the unit is tipped over.” (DOE)
  6. In a bathroom, only use one made for it. “most electric heaters do not have protection against electrocution should the appliance come in contact with water.” (CPSC)

The CPSC counts about 1,600 fires, 70 deaths and 150 injuries a year from portable heaters (2020 to 2022).[1]

Is the Dreo recall a reason to avoid Dreo heaters?

No, but check your model. On October 29, 2026 the CPSC announced a recall of about 338,800 Dreo DR-HSH015 heaters that can overheat and ignite: Can overheat and ignite. 17 reports of ignition, 3 with property damage and 1 hand burn. It was sold at Costco, Dreo.com, Best Buy, Kohl's, Lowe's, QVC and Home Depot for $70 to $110. Amazon did not carry it. The Dreo heaters in our table are the Atom 316 (HSH006), the HSH004 and the HSH020, and none is the DR-HSH015.[12]

Read the model number on the label under your heater. If it says DR-HSH015, unplug it and claim the free replacement from Dreo. Our recall check lists every electric heater recall since mid-2024.

How loud is a cheap space heater?

The numbers in our table are the makers' own, and they run from 34 to 43 dB. Testers measure higher. Good Housekeeping measured the Atom 316 at 47.9 dB at 6 inches on its top setting, against the maker's 34 dB. Wired measured the Honeywell Surround 360 at 54 dB. Makers and testers measure in different ways, so use a maker's number to compare heaters, not to predict the sound in your room.[14][13]

Quietest space heater for sleeping in a bedroom

Can I leave a space heater on overnight?

No. The CPSC says: "Turn off heaters when sleeping." The U.S. Fire Administration says the same about going to bed. Warm the room first. A timer makes this easy: the Dreo Atom 316 and the other heaters marked Yes under Timer switch off by themselves after the hours you set.[1][6]

Is there an oil-filled radiator under $50?

Not one that passes our checks. The cheapest oil-filled radiator we found that is sold by Amazon with every safety feature and a lab mark is the Amazon Basics CY62RR-7 oil-filled radiator at $70.19. An oil-filled radiator has no fan, so it is silent, and it stays warm after you switch it off, but it takes longer to warm a room. See our oil-filled picks if the extra money is worth the quiet.

Best oil-filled radiator heater

When should I not buy a space heater under $50?

Skip it for a garage, a workshop or any room over about 200 sq ft: a garage needs 4,000 to 5,000 W on its own 240 V circuit, and a 120 V plug-in heater is too small. Skip a plain heater in a bathroom; only one made for bathrooms, with a shock-guard (ALCI or GFCI) plug, belongs there. And if you run a heater for hours every day all winter, the bill on a 1,500 W heater is the cost to weigh; a heat pump uses about half as much electricity for the same heat (DOE).[8]

Is a heated blanket cheaper than a space heater?

For one person on a couch or in bed, usually yes, because a blanket draws far fewer watts than 1,500. We compare the two in detail on our heated blanket page.

How did we choose?

We started with every space heater in our Amazon decode, read each listing's own words for watts, thermostat, tip-over shutoff and overheat shutoff, and kept the ones with a UL 1278 record in Intertek's directory that names the model and brand. We then kept the ones sold by Amazon.com whose buy box we read as buyable on November 4, 2026 at $49.99 or less. Prices are the buy box's on that date. The top pick is the heater with the lowest maker-stated noise level that has a timer; a tie goes to the lower price.[15]
