Pricey space heaters heat no better than cheap ones. They just exaggerate the room size.

A $297 space heater heats a room no better than a $26 one. Almost every plug-in heater runs on 1,500 watts, and every 1,500-watt heater makes the same 5,118 Btu of heat an hour.[1][2] What the pricier heaters add is a bigger promise.

We checked 59 heaters on Amazon that say how big a room they heat. All 59 claim more than the 150 square feet a heater maker’s own rule gives 1,500 watts.[3][4] Three of them print the same 5,200 Btu on the listing. One claims 200 square feet, one 350 and one 1,000.

The bigger the promise, the bigger the price. Heaters that claim 500 square feet or more cost a median $220. Heaters that claim 200 or less cost $58. A pricier heater can be quieter, better looking or easier to control. It cannot make more heat.

How we know: we read every claim by hand, confirmed each heater is 1,500 W, and photographed every claim on its live Amazon page. See all 59 claims with proof · How we did this

Three heaters list the same 5,200 Btu. One claims 200 sq ft. Another claims 1,000.

These listings print their heat output, and it is the same number. Then one says that heat warms 200 square feet, one says 350 and one says 1,000. Nothing about the heat explains a room five times bigger. Sellers choose their own room-size numbers.

Claims 1,000 sq ft

It happens again at 5,120 Btu, the heat 1,500 W makes. Shinic lists 5,118 Btu and claims 200 sq ft (proof). Comfort Glow lists 5,120 Btu and claims 800 sq ft (proof). In all, 8 listings print a heat output between 4,600 and 5,200 Btu. Their room claims run from 200 to 1,000 sq ft.

The $297 heater makes the same heat as the $26 one. It just claims 5 times the room.

These are the cheapest and the most expensive heaters in our study. Both are 1,500 W. The EdenPURE costs 11 times as much and claims 1,000 sq ft. The GiveBest claims 200. The EdenPURE also cools, with a fan. It does not make more heat.

You pay nearly 4 times as much for a bigger claim, not more heat

The median price climbs with every step up in claimed room size, from $58 to $220. Every heater in every group makes the same heat.

Part of the gap is looks. 11 of the 59 heaters are electric fireplaces or stoves, which cost more for the cabinet and the flame effect. Take them out and the pattern holds: heaters claiming 400 sq ft or more still cost a median $130, against $54 for those claiming 200 or less.

All 59 room claims are exaggerated, by a heater maker’s own rule

Heater maker Dimplex says to plan on 10 watts of heat per square foot in a standard insulated room.[3] For a 1,500 W heater, that is about 150 sq ft. Not one claim we found is that low. 31 of 59 claim twice that or more.

Some listings say the real number in the fine print. Dreo’s wall heater claims 750 sq ft “as a supplementary source,” but the same sentence says 150 square feet “as a primary heat source.” That matches the rule. Duraflame and R.W.Flame call their numbers “supplemental zone heating.”

The same brand gives the same 1,500 watts different room sizes

5 brands sell 1,500 W heaters with room claims at least 1.5 times apart. Duraflame lists one stove heater at 4,600 Btu for 400 sq ft, and another at 5,200 Btu for 1,000 sq ft. That is 13% more stated heat for 150% more room.

Amazon’s own brand made the most careful claim: 160 sq ft

Amazon Basics Portable Space Heater with Remote Control

The Amazon Basics heater claims 160 sq ft, the smallest number in the study and the closest to the rule. It is also the only listing that says what size room it means: “Can heat rooms up to 160 sqft (standard 9 foot ceiling height)” A taller ceiling means more air to heat.

What does matter: your room, a thermostat and safety

Since every 1,500 W heater makes the same heat, the room-size number tells you nothing. These things do.

Space heater features that matter, and claims that do not add heat
WhatMatters?Why
Your roomMost of allSize, ceiling height, windows and insulation decide how warm one heater keeps you. Plan on about 150 sq ft per 1,500 W heater in an insulated room.[3] A bigger room needs your main heat too.
A thermostatYesIt turns the heater off when the room is warm. That is what lowers the power bill. A heater without one runs at full power until you switch it off.
Tip-over and overheat shutoffYesSpace heaters and heating stoves cause 46% of home heating fires and 76% of the deaths from them (2018 to 2022).[5] The CPSC says to keep a heater 3 feet from bedding, drapes and furniture.[6]
A UL, ETL or CSA markYesIt means an independent lab tested the heater. The CPSC says to buy one certified by a recognized testing lab.[6]
Heater typeFor comfortA fan heater warms the air near you fast. An oil-filled radiator is silent and steady. Infrared warms what is in front of it. Same heat in total.
Plugging into the wallYesFire officials say to plug a heater straight into a wall outlet, never an extension cord or power strip.[5]
Room-size claimsNoSellers pick them. We found 160 to 1,000 sq ft for the same heat.
“ECO mode”NoIt saves power by making less heat, or by cycling off. It cannot make more.
Infrared, mica, copper or graphene “tech”NoThese change how the heat leaves the heater, not how much there is.
“Heats in 2 seconds”NoThe heating element gets hot fast. The room still takes as long as 1,500 W takes.

If you need a heater, pay for safety and a thermostat

Each of these lists a thermostat, tip-over and overheat shutoff and a UL, ETL or CSA mark. They are the cheapest of the 32 we found that do, sold by Amazon.com. Each makes the same 5,118 Btu an hour as the $297 heater above.

All 1,500 W: stated in the listing, or in Amazon’s spec table on the live page. Prices are from October 13, 2026 and change.

How we did this

  1. 424Amazon space heater listings read from 45 searches
  2. 283plug-in electric heaters confirmed at 1,500 W
  3. 78listings that state a room size
  4. 59products, once color versions count once
  • Listings. On October 13, 2026 we ran 45 Amazon searches, from “space heater large room” to 20 brand names, through the Amazon Creators API. We kept each title and feature list exactly as Amazon shows it.
  • Which heaters count. Plug-in electric heaters only. No propane, kerosene, hard-wired or 240-volt units, mats or blankets. Each had to be 1,500 W, stated in the listing or in Amazon’s spec table. We dropped 15 claim listings where we could not confirm 1,500 W.
  • Claims. We pulled every “square feet” phrase and read each one by hand. A heater’s claim is the largest room it names. A range like “200-300 sq ft” counts as 300. One product sold in several colors counts once.
  • Proof. We opened every claim listing on Amazon the same day and saved a screenshot with the claim highlighted. The evidence table links to each one.
  • The rule. We compare claims to heater maker Dimplex’s rule of 10 watts per square foot.[3] Other rules of thumb differ a little. Even if you doubled the rule to 300 sq ft, 20 of 59 claims would still be bigger.

What this does not show

  • We did not test heaters in a room. The finding does not need it: the heat a 1,500 W heater makes is fixed by its wattage.
  • This is the set Amazon’s search returned on one day, not every heater sold. Listings and prices change.
  • A heater can feel warmer in one spot than another of the same wattage, if it aims heat at you. That is not a bigger room.

/ Questions

Frequently asked

Is a more expensive space heater better at heating?
No, not if it is a 1,500-watt heater, and almost every plug-in heater is. All 1,500 W heaters make the same 5,118 Btu of heat an hour. A higher price can buy looks, a quieter fan, a better thermostat or a remote. It does not buy more heat. [1][2]
How big a room can a 1,500-watt space heater heat?
About 150 square feet in a standard insulated room, by heater maker Dimplex's rule of 10 watts per square foot. A cold or drafty room needs more. A room your furnace already keeps fairly warm needs less. None of the 59 heaters we checked claimed less than 160 sq ft. [3]
Why do infrared heaters claim to heat 1,000 square feet?
Infrared heaters warm the people and things in front of them, so you can feel warm without heating all the air. That changes where the heat goes, not how much there is. A 1,500 W infrared heater makes 5,118 Btu an hour, the same as a $26 fan heater. [2]
What should I look for instead of a room-size claim?
A thermostat, so the heater shuts off when the room is warm. Tip-over and overheat shutoff. A safety lab mark such as UL, ETL or CSA. Then pick the type for the job: a fan heater for quick heat near you, an oil-filled radiator for quiet, steady heat. [6]
Can a space heater lower my heating bill?
Only if you turn the rest of the house down and heat just the room you are in. Electric heat usually costs more than gas heat for the same warmth. In 2012 the BBB’s ad review program told EdenPURE to stop its monthly savings claims because it could not back them up. [7]
