How to check a heater's mark in two minutes
- Find the model number. It is on the listing and on the sticker on the back of the heater. Write it down exactly.
- Search the lab's directory. For an ETL mark, use Intertek's free ETL Listed Mark directory. Search the model number. A real listing names your model number and says UL 1278 (the standard for movable electric room heaters). Example, from the record for the Dreo Atom 316: "PTC Fan Heater, Model Nos. DR-HSH006 ... found to comply with the requirements of the Standard(s) for Moveable and Wall or Ceiling-Hung Electric Room Heaters (UL-1278) and are identified with the ETL Listed Mark."
- Match the name and the standard. The record should name your brand or the factory that makes it, and UL 1278. If your model is not there, ask the seller for the certificate number before you plug it in.
- For a UL mark, use UL Product iQ. UL has its own lookup, UL Product iQ, which needs a free account.
- Read the warning label. The CPSC found that most heaters it looked at missed UL 1278's label and manual rules. A real heater has a permanent label that says to keep cords and furniture at least 3 feet from the front.

Every heater here states an ETL mark and every safety feature on its listing, and Intertek's directory has a record naming its model number and brand, evaluated to UL 1278. 5 more heaters state an ETL mark but we found no record under their model number, so we leave them off: Beyond Heat, GiveBest PTC910EO, GiveBest UPH300M, Reaks PTC916, Hykolity ZOH402E. That does not mean they are fake; the maker may list them under another number. Prices read live November 4, 2026.
03 / The finding
What the CPSC found when it checked 10 heaters
In February 2024, staff of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) looked at 10 portable electric heaters that were based on models from its heater report. The result, in the table here, is that a mark on a heater cannot be taken at face value.1
Staff also found that some heaters marketed with third-party lab marks were "marketed with counterfeit certifications," which "could possibly give a false sense of safety." So we did not trust the words on the listing. For each heater below we searched Intertek's own directory by model number.1

Frequently asked
- How do I know a space heater's UL mark is real?
- Look the model number up in the lab's public directory. For ETL, that is Intertek's ETL Listed Mark directory. For UL, it is UL Product iQ. A real listing names your model number and the standard, UL 1278. The mark on a listing or box is only the seller's word.
- Is ETL as good as UL on a space heater?
- Both are accepted testing labs. A heater with an ETL Listed mark is tested to the same US standard, UL 1278, as one with a UL mark. What matters is that the listing is real.
- What does UL 1278 cover?
- It is the safety standard for movable and wall- or ceiling-hung electric room heaters. The directory records on this page say the heaters were evaluated to it.
- Are fake UL or ETL marks on Amazon heaters a real problem?
- The CPSC's own February 2024 review of 10 portable heaters found 3 with possible counterfeit certification markings. It did not say where they were sold, so check the model yourself.
- What if my heater is not in the directory?
- It may be listed under a different model number or brand name than the listing shows. Ask the seller for the certificate or file number, or ask Intertek's directory team (the directory page lists a phone number and email for products in doubt). Until you have an answer, do not leave it running unattended.
- Is it safe to leave a certified space heater on overnight?
- The CPSC says: "Turn off heaters when sleeping." It also says to keep heaters at least three feet from drapes, furniture and bedding, and to plug them straight into a wall outlet.
