Are off-brand air purifier filters as good as the real ones?
Not proven: the best-selling off-brand filter for a Levoit Core 300 costs $23.13 a year against $44.55 for the genuine one, but we found no lab test of it, or of any off-brand filter on this page. For the Core 300, buy the genuine filter: switching saves only about $21 a year. Off-brand makes more sense where it saves more: about $56 a year on a Honeywell HPA300 and $39 on a Levoit Vital 200S.1

Key takeaways
- The best-selling off-brand filter costs 46% to 71% less a year than the genuine filter for each of these 7 purifiers.
- We found no independent test of any of these 7 off-brand filters. Each listing's claims are the seller's own words.
- The tests that do exist found mixed results. In a 2026 government test in Korea, 12 of 20 off-brand filters removed less dust than the purifier claims (68% to 89% of its rating), and 16 of 20 did not meet the standard for odors and gases.
- Off-brand is worth a try where the saving is big: about $56 a year on a Honeywell HPA300 and $39 on a Levoit Vital 200S. Where it saves $25 a year or less, buy genuine.

How we work out cost per year: the pack price, divided by the sets in the pack, times the sets you use a year. Sets a year = 12 ÷ the middle of the maker's schedule. For a Core 300 that is 12 ÷ 7 months, about 1.7 filters a year, so $25.99 × 12 ÷ 7 = $44.55. Off-brand packs often hold 2 to 4 sets, so one box can last 2 years.
We price the off-brand filter on the maker's schedule too. No off-brand seller publishes a tested filter life, so we cannot say if theirs lasts as long.
Prices are Amazon's on November 4, 2026, read from each product page that day. A Honeywell HPA300 holds 3 HEPA R filters and 1 carbon pre-filter, so a year is 3 R filters and 4 pre-filters. A Coway set is 1 HEPA filter and 2 carbon filters, one year's worth.
02 / Tests
Has anyone tested off-brand filters?
A few tests exist. None of them tested the filters in our table.
- Korea Consumer Agency, July 2026. The Korean government's consumer agency tested 20 off-brand filters made for LG, Samsung, Winix and Xiaomi purifiers. For dust, 8 reached at least 90% of the performance the purifier claims; the other 12 reached 68% to 89%. For odors and gases, only 4 of 20 met the standard; the genuine filters removed 81% to 100% of the gases on average. The off-brand filters cost 30% to 56% of the genuine price. It did not test the U.S. models on this page.12
- University of Oklahoma study, 2025. Researchers ran genuine Levoit Core 400S filters and an off-brand replacement (Kaulolado) in the same purifier and tested them with fine salt particles. The genuine filters caught 99.9%; the off-brand ones caught 94.4%. The study was about nicotine, not about which filter to buy.13
- HouseFresh, December 2025. This review site put one off-brand set (Pureburg) in a Coway Mighty. It cleared their smoke-filled test room in 26 minutes with the ionizer on, the same time as the genuine filter. That is one filter and one test.14
- Filter sellers. IQAir, which sells filters, says a fake filter may remove only 58% of particles. It does not say how it measured that.15
None of these tests checked the off-brand filters in our table. So some off-brand filters work about as well, many do not, and you cannot tell which from the listing.
In November 2025, AHAM started a program where an outside lab checks that a replacement filter cleans as well as the original. Levoit and GermGuardian (Guardian Technologies) were among the first makers in it. AHAM is a trade group of appliance makers.
03 / Claims
What the off-brand listings claim
Off-brand listings use words like "H13", "True HEPA" and "99.97%". Those are the seller's claims. Here is what the best seller for each purifier says. None of these listings names a lab or test, and we found no independent test of any of them.
| Off-brand filter | What its listing claims |
|---|---|
| Isinlive Core 300 filter, 2‑packfor the Levoit Core 300 | 3-in-1 filter (pre-filter, main filter, carbon). "Higher efficiency" and "lower wind resistance", "verified by the manufacturer". No particle-capture number. |
| Cabiclean Core 200S filter, 2‑packfor the Levoit Core 200S | Fits the Core 200S and 200S-P only. 2 filters give "up to one and a half years of use". No particle-capture number. |
| JORAIR Vital 200S filter, 2‑packfor the Levoit Vital 200S | HEPA filter that "can effectively attach 99.97%" of particles. Carbon layer "improves deodorant ability by 60%". "Thoroughly tested", with no lab named. |
| Cabiclean AP-1512HH filters, 2 HEPA + 6 carbonfor the Coway Mighty | HEPA filter captures "99.9% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns". "More affordable". No lab named. |
| Smilyan HPA300 filters, 6 HEPA (R) + 8 pre-filters (A)for the Honeywell HPA300 | "H13 True HEPA" that captures "up to 99.97% of particles as small as 0.01 microns". No lab named. |
| Isinlive Filter B, 4 HEPA + 8 carbonfor the GermGuardian AC4825 | Fits FLT4825 purifiers. "Made with FSC-certified paper". No particle-capture number. |
| Smilyan Filter H, 2 HEPA + 2 carbonfor the Winix 5500-2 | "Works as original with the same performance". "H13 HEPA" that captures "up to 99.97% of particles as small as 0.01 microns". No lab named. |
The off-brand Honeywell and Winix listings claim to catch particles "as small as 0.01 microns". The genuine Winix listing claims 99.97% down to 0.3 microns, the size HEPA is graded at. A claim far stronger than the maker's own, with no test behind it, is a reason for caution.
Genuine filters carry claims too, and those are not always right. Levoit is settling a lawsuit over "True HEPA" and "H13" labels; see the questions below.
04 / Decide
When off-brand is a smart save, and when it is not
Off-brand can make sense when
- It saves a lot: about $56 a year on a Honeywell HPA300 and $39 on a Levoit Vital 200S.
- You mostly want dust and pollen out, and you can check the result with an air quality meter (see below).
- You buy a multi-pack from a seller with many reviews and an easy return.
Buy the genuine filter when
- The saving is small: about $13 a year on a Winix 5500-2, $21 on a Levoit Core 300, $22 on a Levoit Core 200S and $25 on a GermGuardian AC4825.
- Someone in the home has asthma or bad allergies, or you run the purifier for wildfire smoke.
- You want odors and gases gone. In the Korea test, 16 of 20 off-brand filters did not meet the standard for gases.
How to check an off-brand filter yourself: buy a PM2.5 air quality meter. With the genuine filter in, light a match or cook something smoky, close the door, run the purifier on high, and time how long the PM2.5 number takes to fall back to where it started. Do the same with the off-brand filter. If it takes much longer, go back to genuine.
05 / Questions
Frequently asked
- Are off-brand air purifier filters as good as the real ones?
- Some are and some are not, and we found no lab test of the best sellers. A 2026 test of 20 off-brand filters in Korea found 8 reached at least 90% of the purifier's dust rating and 12 reached only 68% to 89%. For a Levoit Core 300, the genuine filter is $25.99 on Amazon (November 4, 2026) and switching saves only about $21 a year, so we would buy genuine.
- How long do air purifier filters last?
- It depends on the purifier. Makers say: Levoit Core 300 and Core 200S, 6 to 8 months; Levoit Vital 200S, 6 to 12 months; GermGuardian Filter B, 6 months; Coway Mighty, 1 year for the HEPA filter and 6 months for the carbon filters; Honeywell HPA300, 1 year for the HEPA R filters and 3 months for the pre-filter; Winix Filter H, 1 year. Smoke, pets and running it all day wear filters out sooner.
- Can you wash an air purifier filter?
- Not the HEPA filter. Honeywell's manual says none of its filters are washable, and Winix says its HEPA filter cannot be washed. You can clean the pre-filter: Levoit says to wipe or vacuum it every 2 to 4 weeks, and Winix says to rinse its carbon filter every 3 months.
- Why are Coway filters so expensive?
- The genuine Coway Mighty set is $44.99 on Amazon (November 4, 2026), and it holds one year of filters: 1 HEPA filter and 2 carbon filters. Coway does not say why it costs that much. The best-selling off-brand box is $32.99 for two years of filters, about $16.50 a year.
- What is the Levoit lawsuit?
- Sen et al. v. Vesync (US) Corp., a class action in New York, says some Levoit Core and EverestAir purifiers and filters were wrongly labeled "True HEPA", "HEPA" or "H13". Vesync, the company that sells Levoit, denies it, and the court has not decided who is right. The parties agreed to settle: people who bought one in the U.S. from August 29, 2019 to August 4, 2023 can claim a $10 payment by November 3, 2026. The court decides on the settlement on February 17, 2027.
- Will an off-brand filter void my purifier warranty?
- None of the maker pages we read say that it does. Check your purifier's warranty terms to be sure.
