CADR is clean air per minute (higher is better); AHAM is the group that tests it. Prices are Amazon's on November 4, 2026; each listing names the exact model. Amazon sells the Core 400S as the "Core 400S-P" and the Vital 200S as the "Vital 200S-P": the same machines AHAM and ENERGY STAR certify as the Core 400S and the Vital 200S. RTINGS
Vital 200S review updated June 4, 2026; Core 400S review May 13, 2024, test bench updated July 16, 2026
"Somewhat evenly matched machines, though we'd give the edge to the Vital 200S for most uses."
We agree for pets and for full-speed noise: the Vital measured 32.7 to 55.6 dBA and the Core 33.7 to 58.7. RTINGS's own numbers favor the Core on cleaning: 241 against 216 CFM at full speed, and 163 against 87 CFM at a quiet setting (about 254 against 135 sq ft of room). For a quiet room over 135 sq ft, buy the Core.

How big a room does each one clean?
AHAM certifies the Core 400S for 358 sq ft and the Vital 200S for 388 sq ft. That is the size where each cleans the air 4.8 times an hour on high with an 8 foot ceiling. We compute the same number for other rooms: smoke CADR x 60 / (sq ft x 8). The "1,718 sq ft" and "1,862 sq ft" on Levoit's pages are rooms that get one air change an hour, which is far slower.1
| Room | Core 400S | Vital 200S |
|---|---|---|
| 150 sq ft | 11.6 | 12.5 |
| 250 sq ft | 6.9 | 7.5 |
| 358 sq ft | 4.8 | 5.2 |
| 388 sq ft | 4.5 | 4.8 |
| 450 sq ft | 3.9 | 4.2 |
| 600 sq ft | 2.9 | 3.1 |
Times an hour on the smoke-test speed. AHAM sizes a room at 4.8 times an hour. The Vital 200S has 8% more smoke CADR from AHAM, which is 30 sq ft of extra room. RTINGS measured the other way round at full speed (241 CFM for the Core, 216 for the Vital), so call the two the same class. At a quiet setting under 45 dBA, RTINGS measured 163 CFM for the Core and 87 for the Vital.
Which one is quieter?
- What the makers sayCore 400S: 24 to 52 dB (Levoit's manual; its product page says 22 to 52). Vital 200S: 23 to 54 dB (Levoit's page).5
- RTINGS, same lab, lowest to highest speedCore 400S 33.7 to 58.7 dBA. Vital 200S 32.7 to 55.6 dBA.8
- Core 400S, HouseFresh (3 ft, US unit)Sleep 35.5 dBA, speed 1 38.3, speed 2 43.2, speed 3 51.2, speed 4 60.3.11
- Vital 200S, AirPurifierFirstSleep 41 dBA, speed 1 44.4, speed 2 45.7, speed 3 57.9, speed 4 62.2.12
The Vital is the quieter machine: 1.0 dBA quieter at its lowest speed and 3.1 dBA quieter at its highest in RTINGS's lab, and RTINGS hears a somewhat higher-pitched tone on the Core than on other Levoit Core models. At a quiet setting the Core cleans faster, so which is better in a bedroom depends on the room: over about 135 sq ft, the Core.
Which one costs less to run?
On AHAM's certified watts, running nonstop at the top speed all year, the Core 400S (41.6 W) costs $68.62 a year and the Vital 200S (52.4 W) costs $86.43, at 18.83 cents per kWh. ENERGY STAR lists the Core 400S at 237 kWh a year, about $44.63. The Vital 200S has no ENERGY STAR record.12
Nobody runs a purifier flat out all year. The testers' watts by speed: Core 400S 3.05 W asleep, 8.51 W at speed 2, 39.64 W at speed 4; Vital 200S 3.5 W asleep, 7.9 W at speed 2, 48.2 W at speed 4. Running nonstop at speed 2 costs about $14.04 a year for the Core and $13.03 for the Vital: the same, give or take a dollar. Neither power nor filters settles this: pets, room size and noise do.1112
How much do the filters cost a year?
- Core 400S: every 12 months by Levoit, every 6 to 8 by the testersLevoit's manual: "The filter should be replaced every 12 months." The genuine filter is $49.98 on Amazon, so $49.98 a year. RTINGS says every 6 to 8 months and HouseFresh every 6, which is up to $99.96 a year. Brush or vacuum the pre-filter layer every 2 to 4 weeks.5
- Vital 200S: every 6 to 12 monthsLevoit: "Designed to last 6–12 months." RTINGS and Gear Ranking say 12. The genuine filter is $49.99, so $49.99 a year at 12 months, about $67 at 9 and $99.98 at 6. Wash the pre-filter every 2 to 4 weeks.6
- What that does to the billOn Levoit's own schedules the Core costs $36 to $86 less to own over two years. On the testers' schedules for the Core (every 6 to 8 months) and the Vital's 12, the Vital costs $14 to $64 less. The filter bill is a wash.7

Which one is better for pet hair?
The Vital 200S. Levoit gives it a washable pre-filter, a U-shaped air inlet to stop fur clogging the intake, and a Pet Mode. Levoit describes Pet Mode as a higher fan speed to catch hair and dander faster. The Core 400S has a single 3-stage filter with no washable layer: hair goes straight onto the filter you pay for.4
RTINGS calls the Vital 200S "a very good choice for pet owners" and lists it among its best air purifiers for pets; it calls the Core 400S "an excellent fit for pet owners" for trapping dander. Only the Vital has the washable pre-filter and the U-shaped inlet. For a house with a shedding dog, that is the reason to pay for the Vital.78
Which one has the better sensor and app?
- Core 400S: laser dust sensorLevoit: the laser dust sensor scans for particles and the PM2.5 reading shows on the display. App and Alexa or Google voice control. ENERGY STAR lists it as connected over Wi-Fi with an air quality sensor.3
- Vital 200S: infrared sensorLevoit: the infrared sensor updates the display and the app and drives Auto Mode. AirPurifierFirst says it is less precise than the laser sensors in the Core 300S and Core 400S, and the display shows color only. VeSync app and voice control.4
- Both: the VeSync appSchedules, timers, filter life and air quality in the same app. Levoit lists a 2-year limited warranty on both.4
Which one is easier to fit in a room?
- Core 400S: a tall cylinder10.8 x 10.8 x 20.5 in and 11 lb (Levoit; RTINGS weighs it at 10.5 lb). About 117 sq in of floor.3
- Vital 200S: a wider tower15.6 x 8.5 x 19.8 in and 13.8 lb (RTINGS). About 133 sq in of floor.7
The Core 400S takes about 16 sq in less floor and weighs about 3 lb less. Both stand on the floor; neither is a desktop unit.
Which one costs less to own for two years?
Two-year cost is the Amazon price, the filters you would buy, and two years of power at the AHAM watts, nonstop. The genuine filters cost $49.98 (Core) and $49.99 (Vital), so how often you change them decides the total.
| Filter schedule | Core 400S | Vital 200S |
|---|---|---|
| Both filters every 12 monthsCore $36 cheaper | $377 | $413 |
| Vital filter at 9 months (middle of Levoit's 6-12), Core at 12Core $86 cheaper | $377 | $463 |
| Both filters every 6 monthsCore $36 cheaper | $477 | $513 |
| Core every 6 to 8 months (RTINGS, HouseFresh), Vital every 12Vital $14 to $64 cheaper | $427 to $477 | $413 |
The filters are a cent apart ($49.98 and $49.99), so the schedule sets the total. Core $36 to $86 cheaper on Levoit's own schedules; Vital $14 to $64 cheaper if the Core filter needs changing every 6 to 8 months. At speed 2 nonstop and 12 months each, the totals land within $2 of each other.
Is the Core 400S the same as the Core 400S-P?
Yes. AHAM and ENERGY STAR certify it as the "Core 400S"; Levoit's page and the Amazon listing call it the Core 400S-P, and the listing's model field reads "Core 400S". The Vital 200S is the same story: certified as LAP-V201S, sold as the Vital 200S-P, model LAP-V201S-WUS. The -P is Levoit's current packaging, not a different machine.12
What should you buy instead?
Under about 220 sq ft, the Levoit Core 300 is certified for 222 sq ft and costs less than either of these. For a larger room, start with the large-room list below.
