ChatGPT's answer, checked
Asked "Coway Airmega 200M vs Levoit Core 400S-P for college dorm room", ChatGPT leans Levoit if the prices are close, and Coway if it is much cheaper. We agree. Here is what it got right and wrong.10
-
ChatGPT: best for dorm convenience
Levoit Core 400S-P · 231 smoke CADR · 41.6 W
Right. Its 231 CFM and 358 sq ft match AHAM's certificate. It quotes 22 to 52 dB from Levoit's product page; Levoit's manual says 24 to 52 dB.
-
ChatGPT: best for value
Coway Airmega 200M · 246 smoke CADR · 82 W
Two numbers are off. It says 233 CFM and about 77 W: those are Coway's figures for the Airmega Mighty (AP-1512HH). Coway's 200M page says 246 smoke CADR and 82 W. Its point stands: the Levoit draws about half the power.

You run it all day and night
Levoit Core 400S-P · 41.6 W vs 82 W
About $69 a year of power vs $135 at the US average price. If your housing fee covers power, you won't see the gap on a bill; you will once you take it home.

Your school asks for a CARB-certified purifier
Either one · CARB G-21-166 (Levoit) · G-21-404 (Coway)
Both are on CARB's certified list. The University of Michigan, for one, asks students to check that list. See the dorm rules below. See the rules.
-
Your room is bigger than about 358 sq ft
A bigger purifier · Shared suite or living room
Past that size, neither one cleans the air 4.8 times an hour, the rate AHAM's room sizing uses. See bigger purifiers.
01 / Room size
Room size and CADR: both are plenty for a dorm room
CADR is how much clean air a purifier puts out, in cubic feet a minute. AHAM sizes a room so the air is cleaned 4.8 times an hour. By that rule the Levoit fits 358 sq ft (AHAM-certified) and the Coway 361 sq ft (Coway's figure). ChatGPT asks how big your room is; here is how often each one cleans the air on high, by room size.14
| Room | Levoit | Coway |
|---|---|---|
| 120 sq ft | 14.4 | 15.4 |
| 150 sq ft | 11.6 | 12.3 |
| 200 sq ft | 8.7 | 9.2 |
| 250 sq ft | 6.9 | 7.4 |
| 300 sq ft | 5.8 | 6.2 |
| 400 sq ft | 4.3 | 4.6 |
Times an hour each one cleans the air on high. Grey rows fall below AHAM's 4.8 times an hour. Our math: CADR × 60 ÷ (room sq ft × 8 ft ceiling). Dust and pollen CADR: Levoit 240 and 259 (AHAM); Coway 249 and 277 (Coway). The "1,718 sq ft" and "1,748 sq ft" on the boxes are rooms each cleans only once an hour.
02 / Noise
Noise for sleeping: about the same on low
- Levoit Core 400S-PLevoit's manual: 24 to 52 dB (its product page says 22 to 52). Its listing: “Sleep Mode uses the lowest fan setting and dims the display, with the option to turn display lights off for nighttime use”.3
- Coway Airmega 200MCoway: 24.4 to 55.1 dB(A). Coway says it has “an intuitive air quality indicator with a light that can be turned on or off”.4
On low, both are about 24 dB by the makers' figures, about a whisper. On high the Coway is about 3.1 dB louder. These are the makers' own lab figures. As ChatGPT notes, a meter in your room may read higher.
03 / Power
Power and running cost: the Levoit uses about half
AHAM measured the Levoit at 41.6 W on the speed its CADR test uses; Levoit rates it at 38 W. Coway lists 82 W for the 200M. Running all day at 18.83¢ per kWh (the US average our purifier pages use), that is about $68.62 a year for the Levoit and $135.26 for the Coway: the Levoit saves about $67 a year.1249
It depends on your state. At 12.36¢ in North Dakota, the cheapest, the gap is about $44 a year; at 46.28¢ in Hawaii, the most costly, about $164 a year.9
Both figures assume high speed all day. The Coway's Eco mode turns its fan off when the air has stayed clean for 30 minutes, which cuts its real use. If your housing fee covers power, you won't pay this gap yourself; it counts once you take the purifier home.11
04 / Filters
Filter cost and how often: almost a tie
- Levoit Core 400S-P: one 3-stage filter, every 12 monthsLevoit's manual: “The filter should be replaced every 12 months. You may need to replace your filter earlier or later depending on how often you use your air purifier.” Vacuum the pre-filter every 2 to 4 weeks. The genuine filter is about $49.98 a year.3
- Coway Airmega 200M: HEPA every 12 months, carbon every 6Coway: HEPA filter 12 months, deodorization (carbon) filter 6 months. The genuine set has 1 HEPA and 2 carbon filters, one year's worth. The pre-filter is washable. About $44.99 a year.4
- $49.98 on Amazon
Genuine Levoit Core 400S-P filter
1 filter, about 12 months
- $44.99 on Amazon
Genuine Coway AP-1512HH & 200M filter set
1 HEPA + 2 carbon, about a year
Buy the genuine filter. ChatGPT's tip holds: check the filter's price before you buy the purifier.
05 / Ionizer
Ionizer and ozone: only the Coway has one
The Coway adds a bipolar ionizer after its filters; the Levoit lists none (pre-filter, HEPA and carbon only). Coway's manual: “Ionizer button: Use this button to turn the ionizer on or off.”45
California's Air Resources Board (CARB) certifies purifiers sold in California. It tests each one for electrical safety. A purifier it lists as Electronic may make some ozone, so CARB tests it too: the limit is 0.050 parts per million. CARB lists the 200M as Electronic (certificate G-21-404).6
CARB lists the Levoit Core 400S as Mechanical (certificate G-21-166): filters only, which CARB says “do not generate ozone or ions.” CARB adds that its certificate does not show how well a purifier cleans or that it is safe for health. If you want no ions at all, buy the Levoit, or turn the Coway's ionizer off.6
06 / App
App and smart features: the Levoit has an app, the Coway has buttons
- Levoit Core 400S-PIts listing: “Use the VeSync app to adjust settings, set schedules and timers and monitor filter life”, and an “AirSight Plus laser dust sensor detects PM2.5 levels and displays the reading in real time”. Levoit's page adds Alexa and Google Assistant voice control.11
- Coway Airmega 200MNo app: Coway's 200M page and its listing name none. Coway lists “Airflow Control: 5 Stages (Auto - 1 - 2 - 3 - Eco)”. Its listing: Auto mode is “Constantly monitoring the air quality, the fan automatically adjusts”, and in Eco mode “When the air quality in the room remains purified for 30 minutes or more in Eco Mode, the fan will turn off to conserve energy”.4
07 / Size
Size and shape: round and tall, or wide and shallow
- Levoit Core 400S-PLevoit: 10.8 x 10.8 x 20.5 in, 11 lb. A round tower.2
- Coway Airmega 200MCoway: 16.8 in wide, 18.3 in tall, 9.6 in deep, 12.3 lb.4
The Levoit's footprint is about 117 square inches; the Coway's about 161. In a shared room, put either one where nothing blocks its air intake and outlet.
08 / Price
Price and two-year cost
On November 4, 2026, Amazon sold the Levoit for $189.97 and the Coway for $209.29.
Over two years (the price, the filters you'd buy, and power all day) the Levoit costs about $377 and the Coway about $525: the Levoit costs about $148 less, because it draws half the power.
Prices move often. If the Coway is much cheaper the day you shop, it is a fair buy too; both clean a dorm room well.
09 / Dorm rules
Dorm rules: what two schools say
Rules differ by school, and some ban appliances that others allow. Read your own housing list before move-in. Two we read:
- University of Michigan Housing“Air Purifiers are permitted if certified to emit minimal ozone and be electrically safe.” “Air purifier safety should be verified using the California Air Resources Board (CARB) list.” It also says: “Electrical appliances or devices brought into Michigan Housing spaces must be UL (Underwriters Laboratory) Listed.” (source)
- Oberlin CollegeIts approved appliances list for residence halls includes “Humidifiers, dehumidifiers, diffusers, and air purifiers”. (source)
Both models are on CARB's list (G-21-166 and G-21-404). If your school asks for a UL listing, look for the UL mark on the unit's label.6

11 / Questions
Frequently asked
- Which is better for a dorm room, the Coway Airmega 200M or the Levoit Core 400S-P?
- The Levoit Core 400S-P. It cleans about the same size room (358 vs 361 sq ft) on 41.6 W instead of 82 W, its numbers are AHAM-certified, and it has an app and no ionizer. The Coway is a fair buy if it is much cheaper the day you shop.
- Which is quieter for sleeping?
- About the same on low: 24 dB for the Levoit (its manual) and 24.4 dB for the Coway. On high the Levoit is quieter, 52 vs 55.1 dB. Both let you turn the display light off.
- Which costs less to run?
- The Levoit. Running all day it uses about $68.62 of power a year, the Coway about $135.26, at the US average electricity price.
- Does the Coway Airmega 200M make ozone?
- It has a bipolar ionizer. CARB lists it as an Electronic air cleaner (certificate G-21-404), which means it was tested and makes no more than 0.050 parts per million of ozone. You can turn the ionizer off with its Ionizer button.
- Is the Levoit Core 400S-P CARB certified?
- Yes. CARB lists it as Core 400S, the model name on Levoit's page, under Mechanical (certificate G-21-166): filters only, no ozone or ions. CARB also lists Levoit's code LAP-C401S-WUSR, as Electronic (G-21-279). Levoit lists no ionizer.
- Are air purifiers allowed in dorms?
- Often, but check your school. The University of Michigan allows them if they are certified to emit minimal ozone and are electrically safe, and points to CARB's list. Oberlin lists air purifiers as an approved appliance. Both of these models are on CARB's list.
- How big a dorm room can each one clean?
- Up to about 358 sq ft for the Levoit (AHAM) and 361 sq ft for the Coway (Coway), cleaning the air 4.8 times an hour. In a 200 sq ft room with an 8 ft ceiling, each cleans the air about 9 times an hour on high (our math).
- Why does ChatGPT say the Airmega 200M is 233 CFM and 77 W?
- Those are Coway's figures for the Airmega Mighty (AP-1512HH), a sister model that takes the same filter set. Coway's own 200M page says 246 smoke CADR and 82 W.
How we did this
Method
We did not test these purifiers. The Levoit's CADR, room size and power are its AHAM certificate. The Coway is not in AHAM's directory, so its numbers are Coway's own, labelled as such.
Every number is the same one our Levoit Core 400S-P and Coway Airmega 200M reviews print. Power cost is watts × 24 hours × 365 days at 18.83¢ per kWh, the US average our purifier pages use.
Dorm rules are quoted from the two school pages we read. A button shows only for an offer Amazon sells today.
