Why is my upstairs so hot?
Downstairs is comfortable, upstairs is an oven — every summer. It's one of the most common comfort complaints, and the fix is almost never "a bigger air conditioner." Here's what's actually happening, and the fixes ranked from cheapest to most effective, with no upsell.
Why it happens
Heat rises, so your upper floor collects it. Most homes run one central system on one thermostat — usually downstairs — so cooling stops once the main floor is happy, leaving the upstairs behind. Long duct runs lose cooling by the time they reach the top of the house, and the attic above radiates heat down all afternoon. None of that is fixed by making the system bigger — an oversized unit short-cycles and leaves the house clammy without ever solving distribution.
The fixes, cheapest first
Airflow & attic basics
Seal and insulate the attic (the single biggest lever on upstairs heat), seal and insulate any ducts running through it, open and balance the upstairs registers while partly closing downstairs ones, close sun-facing blinds, and set the fan to "on" instead of "auto" so air keeps mixing between floors. Cheap, and sometimes it closes most of the gap.
Zoning: dampers + a second thermostat
If you have ductwork, a zoning system adds motorized dampers and a second thermostat so the upstairs and downstairs cool independently. It directs more cool air upstairs when it needs it. Best done by a contractor who checks your duct capacity first.
