02 / What the numbers mean for you

What the gap is worth

  • You pay for the install method. The MRCOOL costs $791.00 more. Its listing says its 11.5 ft pre-charged Quick Connect line set means "no vacuum pump, gauges, brazing, or refrigerant handling are required." The Pioneer listing describes a "standard installation" with a 16 ft line set and does not call it DIY.
  • On certified numbers, the Pioneer is the better heater. It rates 9.5 HSPF2 to the MRCOOL's 9, so heat costs $19.82 per million BTU against $20.92. The MRCOOL is a hair ahead on cooling (17.5 vs 17 SEER2), worth $0.32 per million BTU of cooling.
  • Neither is built for hard winters. Neither is cold-climate rated. At 5°F the Pioneer is certified to deliver 8,000 BTU at a COP of 1.9; the MRCOOL 6,200 BTU at a COP of 1.75.
  • MRCOOL's better DIY unit was not for sale new. MRCOOL's DIY 5th Gen 12,000 BTU (115 V) is certified at 23.5 SEER2 and 10.2 HSPF2 and is cold-climate rated, so it beats the Pioneer on those numbers. On 2026-10-17 Amazon offered it only through Amazon Resale, not as a new unit, so it is not compared here.
  • Refrigerant is not a reason to choose. Neither is R-410A. The Pioneer listing names R-32; the MRCOOL listing names R-454B, and AHRI agrees on both.

03 / Other sizes

Other sizes

At 9,000 BTU on 115 V, Pioneer's Diamante Pro (AHRI: 19 SEER2, 9.5 HSPF2, cold-climate) was $858 on Amazon on 2026-09-29, but we found no in-stock MRCOOL DIY 9,000 BTU 115 V listing to match it. Pioneer's 12,000 BTU Diamante Pro and Quantum Ultra 115 V listings showed no Add to Cart button that day. Every DIY listing we read is in the refrigerant table.

How we did this

Method

We matched on size and voltage. Both are 115-volt single-zone wall units in the 12,000 BTU class that had a live Add to Cart button on Amazon on 2026-10-17. Each listing prints a model code; we looked that code up in the AHRI Directory and used the one active rating for it.

Refrigerant "per the listing" is only what the listing states. "Per the certificate" is AHRI's field for the model. Price is the buy-box price on the listing page that day; it changes often.

Running cost per million BTU = 1,000 ÷ SEER2 (or HSPF2) × $0.1883/kWh.
